Creative Solutions for Dealing with Asbestos

Inside Edge offers national clothing retailer a cost-effective solution to encapsulate asbestos

One of the nation’s largest high-end clothing stores has recently undertaken an aggressive remodel schedule and overhauled more than 200 stores this year. During this process, they decided to remove the carpet and wood flooring and replace it with a new design involving luxury vinyl plank (LVP). As with all large-scale remodel programs, challenges are bound to come up. During the re-model of the Creve Coeur, MO store, asbestos was found in the material and mastic under the carpet. Inside Edge found a creative solution and saved them over $50,000 based on the cost of abatement.

Rather than abatement, Schonox APF was used over the existing floor covering and then the new LVP was installed over the APF. The Schonox APF is a Synthetic gypsum fiber-reinforced, self-levelling compound especially suitable for wood floor boards, chip board (V100), and other critical substrates in combination with elastic and textile coverings for interior areas. Embedded fibers provide reinforcement, making it unnecessary to lay a reinforcing mat. It pours over the top of the carpet and cures to a consistency and hardness to accept new flooring, providing a PSI of 6200.

The Inside Edge installation team poured the Schonox APF, then a light skim coat was applied and the new LVP was glued down. The project was completed in just 5 days! By eliminating the need to demo the old floor covering and mastic, the store remained open, there was minimal disruption, the process took much less time than if abatement had been performed, and they saved a significant amount of money. During this remodel roll out Inside Edge provided cost effective solutions to moisture problems, asbestos concerns and layout challenges.
